Abstract

There have been few reports on the visual prognosis of optic neuritis[ON] associated with multiple sclerosis[MS]in Asians, although previous reports have suggested a racial effect on visual prognosis in ON associated with MS. Therefore, in this study we focused on the assessment of visual prognosis in ON associated with MS in Koreans between 1992 and 1998. Thirty-eight eyes from 23 patients were enrolled and the mean follow-up was 16 months.Of the 23 patients, 14 patients had clinically diagnosed MS[CMS]and 9 patients had laboratory supported MS[LSMS].The patients with CMS tended towards more recurrent ON than those with LSMS[3.1:2.6]and relatively low proportion of CMS patients had 0.5 or better final visual acuity[26%:60%]. Korean patients with ON associated with MS were at greater risk of recurrence, and visual prognosis was poor.These results have important clinical implications for the assessment of ON associated with MS in Koreans.
