Abstract
Usually steroid is the first choice drug in cataract surgery because of variety and good effect, but we need a new drug because of side effects such as glaucoma and infection. We selected 68 eyes of 63 patients for cataract surgery and divided two groups. One group used steroid [37 eyes] and the other did nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug [NSAID] [31 eyes] preoperatively for 2 months. We compared the changes of pupil size during the operation, corrected visual acuity, anti-inflammatory reaction, corneal thickness, intraocular pressure, conjunctival inflammation and other adverse reactions after surgery. The results were not significantly different between the two groups except the change of pupil size during operation. The change of pupil size from preop-erative states to end of operation in NSAID group was from 8.64 +/-0.64mm to 7.73 +/-1.05mm and that of steroid group was from 8.55 +/-0.83mm to 6.98 +/-1.60 mm. The results were significantly different between the two groups. Therefore, NSAID may be effective and safe as an anti-inflammatory drug and as a miosis inhibitor in cataract surgery.
