Abstract
PURPOSE
To compare clinical results of LASIK using automatic Summit Krumeich-Barraquer Microkeratome SKBM) with the results using disposable Barron microkeratome and manual SCMD microkeratome. METHODS: The 34 eyes (SKBM group), 29 eyes (Barron group) and 29 eyes (SCMD group) undergoing LASIK in the Department of Ophthalmology were evaluated, retrospectively. The VISX S2 excimer laser was used in all 3 groups. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), mean spherical equivalent (SE) and the amount of astigmatism were evaluated before operation, 1 week, 2 and 6 months after operation. RESULTS: In three groups, UCVA improved from 0.06+/-0.06, 0.06+/-0.02, 0.05+/-0.06 before surgery to 0.90+/-0.12, 0.82+/-0.22, 0.78+/-0.18 6 months after surgery, respectively. The myopic regression was evaluated by spherical equivalent. They were 0.33D, 0.94D and 1.38D in three groups, respectively. Spherical equivalent was changed by 0.44D, 0.39D, 1.20D from 1 week to 2 months. Preoperative astigmatic refraction was -1.45+/-1.03D in SKBM group, -1.35+/-0.96D in Barron group, -1.24+/-1.19D in SCMD group. After 1 week, magnitude of surgically induced astigmatism in SCMD (-0.02+/-1.10D) group was superior to Barron (-0.26+/-0.94D) and SKBM (-0.48+/-0.87D) groups (p=0.003). But after 6 months, -0.52+/-0.78D in SKBM group, -1.04+/-0.47D in Barron group and -0.87+/-0.65D in SCMD group. Change in induced astigmatism was not statistically significant among 3 groups (p=0.101). CONCLUSIONS: Clinical results of LASIK using SKBM microkeratome was satisfactory when compared with previous LASIK results using Barron microkeratome or SCMD microkeratome.
