Abstract
In order to evaluate the distributions of the immunoglobulins in the pterygial tissues, surgically excised pterygia from 18 patients were examined according to PAP staining method to detect the presence of various Ig classes with the control of 5 cases of normal conjunctiva. The PAP staining on the pterygial tissues revealed that the incidence of the positive reactions in 88.7% of IgG, 27.8% of IgA, and 88% of IgE which indicated the noticeable increase in compare with the normal conjunctival tissues. The increased number of IgG, IgA, and IgE in pterygial tissues appeared statistically significant than those of normal conjunctiva(p<0.05). From the evaluation of results, it was attributed that the occurrence of pterygium may result with the immunological processes of inflammatory component. The increase of the IgE in pterygial tissue might also be contributable for the Type I hypersensitivity for the pathogenesis of pterygium.
