Effects of Argon Laser Suturotomy on Astigmatism Induced by Cataract Surgery.

Abstract
We evaluate the efficacy and safety of argon laser suture ablation as comparied with surgical suture cut in 90 eyes who underwent extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) with posterior chamber lens implantation (PCL). Among the patients who underwent ECCE with PCL implantation between May, 1990 and August, 1991, 90 eyes of 83 patients who could be followed up over a period of 12 weeks and had astigmatism of 3 or more diopters at postoperative 4 weeks were included in this study. Group A was 30 eyes which underwent argon laser suturotomy (ALS) 4 weeks after surgery. Group B was composed of cut of suture surgically in 30 eyes 4 weeks after surgery. The final C Group was 30 eyes, served as control. Keratometric values and refraction were obtatined before and at selective interval (1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks) after operation. We obtained the following results: 1. The most prominent reduction of astigmatism was occurred immediately after suture cutting (Group A, B), and the amount of it's reduction was 2.38 +/- 1.21 and 2.51 +/- 1.90D, respectively (p<0.05).
